I have been tossing around all week-- mentally, that is--- ideas about narrative and storytelling as they influence and inform my artwork. I work with images that resonate meaning for me and view them, always, in relationship to each other. In essence, I tell a story through my images- with or without incorporating text. I have said elsewhere that titles are like poetry to me and are often a critical component of the piece upon which I am working. In fact, I write down titles that come to me as I work, with the accompanying dates. And when the piece is finished I often reflect upon the journey I have taken - as revealed by the titles.
These ideas surfaced again this morning when I saw that there is a new retrospective on the work of Joan Brown, a vibrant and inspiring figure painter. I think you should take a look at her work. The exhibit opened on October 14 at the San Jose Museum of Contemporary Art. Here is the link:http://www.sjmusart.org/joan-brown/
